What is Modal Fabric?
Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric made from beech tree pulp. It's softer than cotton, more breathable than polyester, and has a natural drape that makes it ideal for fluid silhouettes like shirts, kurtas, and lightweight co-ords. Modal is also colour-fast, meaning it holds dye well and retains its vibrancy longer than many other fabrics.
At Shades of You, we use 100% modal for several of our handcrafted pieces — including our bestselling Midnight Rhythm Modal Shirt — because it combines the comfort of a natural fabric with the fluid drape that makes batik prints look their best.
How to Wash Modal Clothing
Modal is more delicate than cotton, but still easy to care for if you follow a few simple rules:
- Hand wash is best. Use cold or lukewarm water with a mild detergent. Avoid harsh soaps or detergents with enzymes — they can break down the fibres over time.
- Machine wash on gentle cycle if needed. Use a mesh laundry bag and a gentle, cold-water setting. Avoid the normal or heavy-duty cycle.
- Wash dark colours separately for the first two or three washes, especially if the fabric uses natural dyes. A small amount of colour bleed is normal for natural dyes in the first wash.
- Don't wring or twist. Modal loses its shape if wrung forcefully. Gently press out excess water instead.
Drying Modal Fabric
- Dry in shade. Direct sunlight can fade natural dyes, especially on batik-printed modal. A shaded outdoor area or an indoor drying rack is ideal.
- Lay flat to dry when possible, especially for shirt-style pieces. This prevents stretching along the seams.
- Do not tumble dry. High heat can shrink modal and damage the print.
Ironing Modal
Modal wrinkles easily but also releases wrinkles just as quickly. A few tips:
- Iron on low heat — the "silk" or "delicate" setting on most irons
- Iron inside out to protect the print
- A light steam iron works well if your piece has stubborn creases
- Alternatively, hang the garment in a steamy bathroom for a few minutes — the steam will naturally release most wrinkles
Storing Your Modal Pieces
- Fold neatly rather than hanging — modal can stretch on a hanger over time
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Avoid plastic bags for long-term storage; use breathable cotton pouches instead
- If storing for a season, wash and fully dry before folding away
A Note on Natural Dyes
Many batik pieces use natural or low-impact dyes that are gentler on the environment and your skin. These dyes are more vibrant and more complex than synthetic alternatives — but they do require gentle washing to preserve their depth over time. The good news: with proper care, natural-dye batik pieces age beautifully, deepening and softening in a way synthetic fabrics never do.
