Inclusive Sizing in Ethnic Wear: Why XS to 6XL Matters

Ethnic wear has a sizing problem. Walk into most stores or browse most online catalogues, and you'll find kurtas and suit sets available up to a size L or XL at best — with limited options, limited designs, and the implicit message that fashion beyond a certain size is an afterthought.

At Shades of You, we disagree. Our entire collection is available from XS to 6XL, and we offer complimentary customisation to your exact measurements on every order. Here's why this matters — and how we make it work.

The Problem with Standard Ethnic Wear Sizing

Standard ethnic wear sizing in India typically runs from S to XL, with occasional 2XL options. For anyone outside this range — petite, tall, plus-size, or with proportions that don't fit neatly into a standard cut — the experience of shopping for ethnic wear is frustrating at best and disheartening at worst.

Even within the standard size range, fit is often inconsistent. A kurta might have a generous chest measurement but a narrow shoulder. A salwar might be cut wide but too short. Standard sizing treats bodies as uniform when they're anything but.

Why Batik Makes Inclusive Sizing Easier

One of the less-discussed advantages of handcrafted ethnic wear is that it's easier to customise. Unlike mass-produced garments cut on industrial lines, handcrafted pieces are made by artisans who work with individual measurements — which means adjusting a length, widening a silhouette, or changing a neckline depth doesn't require a different production line. It just requires communication.

This is why we introduced complimentary customisation from the start. When you order from Shades of You, you'll find a "Custom Size / Alterations" note field at checkout. Tell us your bust, waist, hip, and length measurements — or any specific adjustment you want — and we'll craft your piece accordingly, at no extra cost.

What We Mean by XS to 6XL

Our standard size range runs XS through 4XL, with custom sizes up to 6XL available on request. Rather than rigid size charts, we encourage you to share your actual body measurements so we can cut each piece specifically for you.

We also offer a detailed size guide on each product page, along with model information so you can gauge fit and fall before ordering.

Tips for Getting the Best Fit

  • Measure over your clothes when taking body measurements for ethnic wear — this gives a more realistic sense of how the garment will feel when worn.
  • Specify length preferences — our standard kurta lengths are designed for a 5'6" frame, but if you're shorter or taller, mention your preferred length in centimetres.
  • Tell us about any specific fit concerns — if you carry weight differently in one area, or if standard kurtas tend to be too tight at the hips but too loose at the waist, tell us. We'll adjust.
  • When in doubt, size up for a relaxed, comfortable fit. Our fabrics — particularly modal and cotton — drape beautifully at a relaxed fit and can always be tailored down.

Returns and Exchanges
